Our comprehensive grooming services, performed by our groomer, Junior, are available during hospitalization, boarding and day care in addition to daily appointments. Selections include bathing, spa packages, trimming and FURminator treatment.

  • Bathing
    • Pets are bathed using the Prima Animal Bathing system which provides a massaging jet of shampoo penetrating the thick coat directly to the skin. This system creates a cleaner pet as well as making bathing quicker and less stressful on the pet. Shampoo choices include a standard cleansing shampoo, a flea shampoo, a variety of medicated shampoos or a shampoo that you provide. A coat conditioner or other medicated conditioner is available upon request.
    • Included with the standard bath is a pedicure. All of the nails are trimmed with either standard pet nail trimmers or filed down with a dremel at your request. Also included is a thorough ear cleansing and expression of the anal glands.
    • Pets are thoroughly dried, brushed and if desired, perfumed spray applied, prior to discharge to help create a handsome, clean and odor-free companion.

  • Medicated Dips
    • Some pets have serious skin conditions requiring a medicated dip. Some of these dips have strong odors and require special handling to be applied correctly. Our expert grooming staff can apply these dips to your pet making it a convenient option for treating your pet’s dermatological needs.

    • The specialized FURminator shampoo and de-shedding tool have been proven to reduce shedding by 90% in pets after one or two treatments. By reducing the amount of shedding, your pet will be healthier, cleaner and in cats, it can even reduce the frequency of hairballs.

  • Breed Cuts
    • Breed specific haircuts are available by appointment. When you check-in your pet for grooming, you will fill out a grooming sheet detailing how you would like your pet’s hair to be cut. If you have specific requests or if your pet has special needs, ask to speak directly to Junior, our groomer, to be sure that your pet can be groomed exactly as you instruct.

  • Sanitary Clips
    • A sanitary clip involves trimming the hair around the “private” areas to help prevent the accumulation of urine or feces on the hair and skin. This is particularly helpful for long-haired dogs and cats and for those with thick, dense undercoats such as Shepherds and arctic breeds.

  • Feline Trims
    • Cats require special TLC when being groomed because of their level of stress. Our grooming staff is trained to help cats have a pleasant experience during the grooming process. A variety of feline haircuts are available from trims, to lion cuts, or even a complete shave-down for very matted long-haired cats.

    • Three spa packages are available to pamper and refresh your pet
      • The Comfort Spa
        • Includes a comfort bath which soothes dry, irritated skin, comfort aromatherapy which calms and soothes, and a nourish vitamin conditioner which helps revitalize the coat.
      • The Renew Spa
        • Includes a renew bath which provides deep moisture to restore your pet’s coat, a fresh facial scrub which exfoliates and removes tear stain, a renew aromatherapy treatment which refreshes and pampers, and a nourish vitamin conditioner to help revitalize the coat.
      • The Ultimate Spa
        • Includes a fresh bath which is deep cleansing and purifying, a fresh facial scrub to remove tear stain and exfoliate the skin, a fresh aromatherapy treatment providing your pet with an invigorating fresh scent, a nourish vitamin conditioner to help revitalize the coat and a nail and paw treatment to clean, soothe and revitalize tired paws.

Frequently Asked Questions about boarding in Pet Keeper

What vaccinations are required for cats and dogs to board with Pet Keeper?

  • For dogs, the DAP (distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus), Bordetella, Parainfluenza and Rabies vaccinations must all be up to date prior to boarding.
  • For cats, the FVRCPC (feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia, and Chlamydia) and the Bordetella vaccinations are both required.
  • If your pets vaccinations were performed at another hospital, you will need to provide a copy of the vaccination history at the time of boarding as proof of current vaccinations. If there are any overdue vaccinations, they can be updated by one of our veterinarians prior to boarding if desired. Your pet must have been examined by one of the veterinarians at Plaza Del Amo Animal Hospital within the last 12 months in order to update any necessary vaccinations.

How long before boarding should my pet’s vaccinations be updated?

  • Ideally, vaccinations should be given at least 2 to 4 weeks prior to boarding to ensure adequate protection. Vaccinations given at the time of check-in are unlikely to provide complete protection. However, if vaccinations have been given in the past, there is some carry-over of immunity past the vaccine expiration date. Intranasal vaccinations (only available for Bordetella vaccination) provide the most rapid protection against the pathogen compared to the injectable vaccinations.

Why is the Bordetella vaccination required for cats to board in Pet Keeper? And why does my veterinarian not offer the vaccination?

  • Bordetella is an upper respiratory pathogen in cats just as it is in dogs, however it is less common. It is not a core vaccination that is recommended for most cats because most cats have a very low risk of acquiring the bug. However, cats that are confined in large groups (like those in most boarding facilities) are most at risk of acquiring this infection. Because of this, we require the Bordetella vaccination annually for cats boarding at our facility. Veterinarians who do not have large boarding areas for cats often do not carry this vaccination. There are often concerns about over-vaccinating cats because of the risk of vaccine-associated feline sarcoma. This cancer has been found at the site of injectable vaccinations in a small number of cats and is thought to be associated with the vaccination or with the inflammation associated with the injection. Because the Bordetella vaccination is administered as nose-drops, there is no increased risk of vaccine-associated feline sarcoma with this vaccination. Our goal is to make every effort to ensure that your cat, as well as all of the feline visitors to our boarding facility, is fully protected against upper respiratory infections during their visit with us.

Why is an examination with a veterinarian required prior to vaccinating my pet for boarding?

  • The California Veterinary Medical Board requires an active Veterinary-Client-Patient relationship before any treatment can be administered to a patient including a recent physical examination. Therefore, in order for our veterinarians or staff to provide any pet with medical treatment including vaccinations, a physical examination must have been performed by one of our veterinarians within the previous 12 months. If your pet normally sees another veterinarian and you do not wish to have an examination performed by one of our veterinarians, please be certain that your pet’s vaccinations are updated prior to boarding and be sure to bring a copy of the current vaccinations with you at the time of check-in. If your pet’s vaccinations are not current and your pet has not been examined by one of our veterinarians within the last 12 months, an examination charge as well as the charge for the vaccinations will be necessary before your pet can be checked into boarding. For more detailed information you can view section 2032.1 of the California Veterinary Medicine Practice Act.
  • This law is in place for your pet’s protection. If your pet has an underlying undiagnosed medical condition, it may be detrimental to his health to have a vaccination. The safety and health of your pet is always our primary concern.

What if my pet has fleas when he checks into boarding?

  • All pets are examined by one of our Pet Keeper staff prior to check-in using a flea comb. If fleas are found on your pet, a Capstar (Nitenpyram) tablet is given orally immediately upon check-in. This tablet kills all of the adult fleas on your pet within 30 minutes. This treatment is designed to prevent a flea infestation from colonizing the boarding facility but does not provide month-long protection and should not be considered a substitute for the topical monthly flea control medications.

Do you provide boarding for puppies and kittens that are not yet fully vaccinated?

  • Yes. Young puppies and kittens that are not yet fully vaccinated are boarded in our hospital treatment area away from the general boarding to limit their exposure to other dogs and cats. Current vaccinations are still required for these patients provided that they are old enough to receive vaccinations (i.e. over 6 weeks of age) unless there is a medical condition preventing them from having vaccinations.

What do I need to bring with my pet on the day he checks into boarding?

  • Bring a copy of your pet’s current vaccination history if the vaccinations were not performed at Plaza Del Amo Animal Hospital, and any medications she is taking. We will be happy to provide your pet with comfortable bedding, food and water, however, if your pet is on a special diet or has a sensitive stomach, you may bring food and treats from home. You may also bring you may also bring a few items from home such as a small blanket, bed or toys as long as you keep the number to a minimum. Please be certain to label everything you bring from home with your pet’s name and your last name so it does not get misplaced while your pet is boarding. The food provided in Pet Keeper is Hills Prescription diet i/d or Purina Veterinary Diet EN for both dogs and cats available in canned and dry formulas. The Pet Keeper staff will give you back your dog’s leash and collar to prevent them from becoming misplaced while boarding. If your pet requires a special harness for walks, please be sure to bring that as well at the time of check-in and be certain to specify if your pet only wears the harness during walks or if she should wear the harness at all times.

What if my pet is taking medications?

  • The Pet Keeper staff is trained to give all necessary medications to your pet during his visit with us including oral medications, as well as topical medications. In addition, our trained technicians can administer injectable medications (such as insulin for diabetic pets). Be certain to bring all of the medications (including syringes for injectable medications) in their original prescription bottles as provided by your veterinarian with the instructions written on the bottle. In addition, you will complete a Pet Keeper admittance form with the detailed instructions for how and when to give the medications to your pet. Please be certain to notify our staff if the instructions differ from your veterinarian’s prescribing information written on the bottle of medication. Oral medications for dogs are often hidden in pieces of hot dog or in pill pockets to entice the dog to eat their medications without having to use force, if you do not wish for your pet to have the medications given this way, please specify that on the Pet Keeper admittance form at check-in.
  • For diabetic pets, we will offer your pet’s food at approximately 6am and 6pm to be certain they eat their meal prior to their insulin dose given at 7am and 7pm. Unfortunately, some pets, particularly cats, become stressed while boarding and may not eat. If this happens, one of our technicians will hand feed your pet a canned food to make sure there is adequate food in their system before the insulin injection is given to prevent the development of hypoglycemia, a dangerously low blood sugar.

What hours can I check-in and check-out my pet from boarding?

  • The hours for Pet Keeper are Monday through Friday from 7am to 7pm, Saturday from 8am to 4pm for check-in and check-out, and Sunday from 1pm to 4pm (for boarding check-out only). If you check-out prior to 11am, there will not be an additional charge for that day of boarding. There will always be a boarding charge for Sunday check-out.
